Let’s be honest, there comes a point, you simply get tired of the usual toppings that go on bread. There’s only so much smashed avocado or peanut butter you can eat on your toast.

The thing about toast is that it’s sort of an empty canvas for being creative with flavors and textures. You can do so much with your browned-bread and give it your own touch. No more shall your breakfasts be humdrum!

As always, health and nutrition should be your priority, so it’s also important to ensure that the things you’re topping your toast with are healthy.

Ten Tasty Tips to Top Your Toast

Without further ado, let me introduce some delicious toast topping ideas, including some basic ones reinvented to bring in more flavor.

Hummus

If you’ve been following my blog, you would know I’m a big hummus fan. It’s simply so versatile, and you can use it in so many recipes, including on your top. While you can make hummus at home too, there are plenty of good products in the market too that you can use. For instance, for my hummus salad dressing, I use Sabra.

You can top it off with some veggies and maybe some olive oil, but very little quantity. Go for plain hummus if you’re adding more flavors. But do try the different variety of flavors.

Again, you can find these flavors on the shelf of stores or make them from scratch at home.

Peanut Butter

You’re probably getting tired of just spreading peanut butter alone on your toasts, so try adding some more textures. Simply put a layer of peanut butter on your toast and add some fruits or veggies to bring in some variety of flavors.

One of my favorite things to put on a peanut butter toast is blueberries with coconut flakes. It’s an absolute smash combo that combines the softness of the berries with the crunchiness of the coconut, all with a backdrop of the silky, gooey feel of the peanut butter.

Romesco

For a punch of flavor, try adding Romesco sauce to your toast. The bold sauce has its origins in Catalonia, but it has become a favorite around the world. All it takes is roasted tomatoes or sundried tomatoes, almonds (maybe pine nuts, if you have), red pepper, garlic, and some spices.

Its rich tomato flavor works well with roasted vegetables, so when layering your toast with romesco, perhaps top it off with some roasted veggies.

Romesco is super versatile as it can be used as a dip or a sauce for an entree. However, you can also use it with bread, but make sure to really toast it brown, so it’s a little crunchy.

Fresh Tomatoes or Sauce

If Romesco is too zippy of a flavor for you, why not go for simple tomato sauce, or better yet, simple tomatoes.

In Spain, they rub their toast with a garlic clove to infuse the flavor before topping with tomato and drizzling with olive oil. You can add salt and pepper, too, if you’d like. Amazing.

bruschetta fresh tomatoes

Bruschetta is nothing but simply toasted bread with tomatoes on top. Although there are variations and restaurants like to experiment with it often, I find the best thing to do is keep it simple, really simple.

You can add some drizzles of balsamic vinegar if you like, or add fresh basil. You can use any kind of tomatoes, although cherry tomatoes turn out the best on bread.

Tzatziki

Tzatziki is fresh, flavorful, and makes a good combo with bread, especially hard roasted bread. This Greek yogurt and cucumber combo are typically served with pita bread, but you can also use it to top off any other bread like whole-wheat, rye bread, or sourdough

While authentic tzatziki is made from Greek yogurt, you can easily use a vegan alternative too. Just use vegan yogurt instead of Greek yogurt, and you’re good.

Baba Ganoush

Consider this an alternative to hummus, as baba ganoush also has its origins in the Middle East. It’s an egg plant-based drip that’s completely vegan. You mix eggplant with tahini, lemon juice, and salt. However, the way you prepare the eggplants is a little more detailed. Here’s a recipe:

Turns out, you can even broil the eggplants if you don’t have a stove. In fact, that will save you a considerable amount of prep time.

Pesto

Pesto isn’t just for pasta or salad, you can even use it with bread. It works best with focaccia or sourdough. You can use it on any crispy bread.

pesto fresh basil

If pesto alone is too much of a basil punch on your bread, you can tone it down with tomatoes, cucumber, or vegan cheese

Making pesto is super easy as all you need is fresh basil, pine nuts or walnuts, garlic, lemon juice, nutritional yeast, salt, and olive oil.

Sliced Fruit

If you’re someone who doesn’t get enough fruits, may I suggest eating them with your toast? It’s super simple and nutritional. Plus, the flavors of fruits can make your toast so much more exciting.

So what fruits can you top your toast with? Really anything you like!

I enjoy kiwi, apples, bananas, and peaches on my toast. You can also sprinkle some ground flaxseeds on top. You can also add some maple syrup for extra sweetness, although the natural sweetness of the fruits should be enough.

Fresh Berries

Fresh berries can workout great with toasted bread slices. Just berries alone on the bread should be enough to pack in quite a lot of flavor. Berries with French toast are already a classic around the world.

You can mix different berries but if you just have a single variety, just use that. You’ll love any kind of berries on your bread!

Jam and Jellies

The next best thing to fresh fruits and berries are jams and jellies. Yes, there are loads of varieties in the supermarkets, but you should try making your own jam or jelly at least once. Jam and jellies last a long time, so you can make them once and use them for the whole month or even longer.

That said, if you’re pressed for time, you can simply add your favorite jam or jelly to your shopping list. It’s a quick and easy breakfast staple that can use with virtually any kind of bread. But make sure to buy quality products free of artificial flavors and added sugars.

Wrap Up

These ten tasty tips to top your toast will make your mornings a bit more flavorful and fun.

And why just morning? You can enjoy these toppings on bread slices any time of the day. All of these are not just tasty but also contain healthy plant-based ingredients that give you so many benefits.

With the carbs from the bread and the additional nutrients from the toppings, you’ll feel filled up for quite some time.
